Gay Democrat Runs For Arkansas Lt. Gov.

This will be an interesting story to follow:

(Little Rock, Arkansas) Political consultant Drew Pritt has announced he's seeking the Democratic nod to run for Arkansas lieutenant governor.

Two other candidates have already announced their candidacy for the party's nomination - state Senator Tim Wooldridge and former state Representative Mike Hathorn.

Pritt said if he were to become the party nominee and beat the Republican candidate in the November 2006 general election, he would be the first openly gay person elected to statewide office in Arkansas.

But, the 30-year old says he does not want to be known as just the gay candidate.

"I'm running for lieutenant governor because Arkansas' future belongs to all of us, especially in south Arkansas," he said in a news release.

"We need to stop being Democrat and Republican, white and black, gay and straight, liberal and conservative, red state or blue state."

Pritt said he disclosed his sexuality now because the question eventually would have been raised.

Pritt has run his own political consulting firm and has worked for a number of national, statewide and local campaigns across the country.

In the 2004 presidential campaign he worked as a field coordinator for retired Gen. Wesley Clark.

Pritt also is a veteran of the Arkansas Army National Guard.

Republican Lt. Gov. Win Rockefeller cannot seek re-election because of term limits. Rockefeller had attempted to run for governor but withdrew last month after contracting a blood disorder that can lead to leukemia.

Three Republicans are seeking their party's nomination.
